Galen Saturley
Born in 1978 in Eugene Oregon and raised in Fairfield, Iowa, Galen Saturley
began his career as a photographer at the age of twelve while traveling in
Oregon. Bit by the bug while capturing nature’s wonders out in
the Pacific northwest, he was hooked for life.
He experimented with making films during his school career, including an
award-winning short documentary about violence in the media, but came to
realize he preferred the quiet simplicity of still photography over the more
complex dynamics of film making.
Travel inspired his choice of natural subjects, and after studying at the
University of Iowa for two years, he moved on to make his home in the
mountains of Colorado, ending his academic career to fully pursue his
artistic one. The mountains were rich with subjects and new photographer
friends, one of whom encouraged him to visit his home state of
Massachusetts.
In 2002, he moved to the Northeast coast, finding new inspiration in the
scenery of Cape Cod, the New Hampshire coast, and Boston.
Galen does much of his work with a square-format Hasselblad, preferring film
to digital. This camera has freed him to focus on composition, play of
lighting, shapes, lines, juxtaposition of warm and cool tones, and bold,
vibrant colors in his images.
Photography for him is an outlet, a vehicle of reference by which he can
gauge where he has been, and the direction in which he is going. He views
photography as a mirror which reflects his abilities and passions, and
considers it a purification process, a process of perfecting his own style.
To Galen, being immersed in an inspirational moment is to be in a deep state
of meditation: the purest form of art.
Galen Saturley presently lives in historic Portsmouth, NH, about an hour north of Boston, dividing his time between event photography and artistically capturing his own views of city and nature.
